Fargo, ND (WDAY TV) - A thirty year tradition turns another chapter Friday as Clara Barton Elementary kids hit the ice.

Sharpened Skates and tied laces were attached to 1st through 5th graders Friday, as they traded the classroom for the ice rink.

The 31st Ice Skating Classic pitted skaters against each other as they raced from one end of the ice to the other.

Students were paired up with other skaters of similar ability, boys racing boys, girls racing girls, and hockey players racing each other.

Volunteers served hot cocoa and handed out award ribbons to all of the racers.

Stella Peterson/Clara Barton Skater: "I have a little secret how you can win. Well I learned this last year, you go in the back of the line and then you race less people."

Scheels All Sport sharpened all of the school's ice skates for the event, free of charge.
