Fargo, ND (WDAY TV) - On this National Human Trafficking Awareness Day, our local Senators are saying minors who are sold for sex should be considered victims - not criminals.

That's why Minnesota's Amy Klobuchar and North Dakota's Heidi Heitkamp are sponsoring the Stop Exploitation Through Trafficking Act, which Klobuchar co-authored.

It would improve victims' access to resources and help protect children who are being trafficked from criminal prosecution.

The Senators discussed the bill with local law enforcement at a roundtable in Fargo today.

Amy Klobuchar/ Minnesota Senator: "When it's a kid who is a victim of sex trafficking, they're not supposed to be prosecuted, they're victims here. So, in order to get them to testify and to go after the sex trafficking rings we actually need their help and we want to turn their lives around."
