Fargo, ND (WDAY TV) - Lawrence Welk's childhood home is now in the hands of taxpayers.
The North Dakota Historical Society voted today to purchase the Strasburg home of the famous bandleader for $100,000.
The six-acre homestead is on the National Register of Historic Places and will operate as a tourist attraction.
Welk was of the "Germans from Russia" heritage.
Those with the Germans from Russia Heritage Collection at NDSU say the site serves many historic purposes.
Jeremy Kopp, Germans from Russia Heritage Collection: "It's more than just Lawrence Welk's childhood site. It's the only site in North Dakota that will focus on agriculture. We currently do not have a historic site that focuses on agriculture. We currently do not have a site that promotes the Germans from Russia, which makes up such a large population of our state."
The Tri-County Tourism Alliance will operate the site until June 30th, 2015, when the Historical Society will take over.
