Fargo, ND (WDAY TV) - The NDSU sidelines will have a brand new look this coming fall, but new head coach Chris Klieman says the principles of Bison football will stay the same.
That's why Klieman called on an old friend, former NDSU assistant Tim Polasek and asked him to be his offensive coordinator.
Tim Polasek/New NDSU Offensive Coordinator: “This is a job that I've wanted for two or three years, not to step over Vigen or anything. When Coach Bohl left the wheels started spinning pretty good.”
I remember the day you left the outpouring on social media from players that were upset that you were leaving and then to hear coach Klieman say about all the players asking if you were coming back. What goes through your mind when you hear that?
Polasek: “It's important to me that I created a really good relationship with them. It may have to be just a little bit different. It may have to take them a little more time to get into my heart and soul or whatever you want to call it. That night was one of the most fun times I've had in college football. They were tweeting some of the things that I commonly say and some of those things that I snap off on. The players mean everything to me. I think the cool part about being a coach is you are a teacher, but you can create some relationships that are unbelievable and without that I'm certain that I would do something else.”
Being a coordinator is a different role and obviously there are questions about that and you're experience. You haven't done it before. What do you say to that?
Polasek: “I've been preparing for it though. When it's something that you see yourself doing whether it was five years ago or it was three years ago. You start to calculate...okay what is Vigen thinking about here. Am I on par with what he's thinking? There's certain things that are going to have to be learned and experienced as we go. Calling a football game, I'm going to ask Coach Klieman for as many situations that apply in a scrimmage setting so that I'm able to go out there and call it off the cuff. Whether it's five minutes in the spring or five minutes every other day. Those are things that I'm going to ask for.”
Polasek will also handle coaching the running backs, a job he held in his first tenure.
