Fargo, ND (WDAY TV) - It comes with the territory of cold weather, water main breaks.

Monday morning, it meant an early wake-up call for some people.

Just after midnight, Public Works Crews responded to 5th Street and 4th Avenue.

Water was gushing out of the road and quickly rising on the wheels of some parked cars, the fear that they'd become frozen to the ground.

Police began knocking on doors urging owners to move their vehicles yet some still had to be towed.

Mark Williams/Fargo Public Works: “We're waiting for locates right now and then we'll be able to break the concrete out, break the frost out and then fix this water main break. Are you expecting more in these temperatures? It's a possibility, it gets this cold and the ground starts shifting.”

Unfortunately Williams says there is nothing anyone can do to prevent the breaks, it just goes along with winter.
