Fargo, ND (WDAY TV) - A problem resulting from the sub-zero cold forced some Fargo residents out of bed and outside in the middle of the night, a water main break required them to move their vehicles.

Public Works Crews responded to the downtown area at 5th Street and 4th Avenue just after midnight.

The freezing temperatures forced a pipe to burst and water was gushing around the block, crews were afraid the rising water would freeze some cars tires to the ground.

Mark Williams/Fargo Public Works: “When the water comes out of the ground it kind of creates pockets and makes it very difficult for them to move once it's completely frozen. So did you guys have to go around and knock on doors? The police department went around and knocked on doors.”

Williams said some cars had to be towed, he expects more water main breaks as the cold temperatures continue.
