Well high winds and heavy snow are a recipe for widespread power outages, so you should prepare a plan.

According to the Insurance Institute for Business and Home Safety finding alternative heating sources is the first step, things like a wood stove, space heater, or a wood fireplace.

You should think about packing up a portable generator, in addition you'll want to store fuel.

But many people are unaware of what to expect when the power goes out.

Jenna Pepsin/Lives in Fargo: "We'd probably just get my kids together, grab a bunch of pillows, blankets piles on the floor and read books or something. We'd find a way to stay warm."

Of course the very first thing you should do if your power goes out is report it, so the problem can be fixed.
