Casselton, ND (WDAY TV) - When it comes to adding up costs from the crash there's a long road ahead.

City leaders could not even begin to estimate how much the accident has cost the city of Casselton.

In addition to clean up both on the railroad and surrounding farmland, they say businesses were shut down and people were out of work.

Instead they had to stay at hotels, or Discovery that too involves clean up.

But leaders say it's not reimbursement they're worried about- it's getting answers and change from the railroad.

Ed McConnell/Casselton Mayor: “I'll keep in touch with the governor and I would imagine I’ll probably talk to our senators too and our congressmen and see if we can't keep something moving on the federal level. We have to have assurances that something like this isn't going to happen again.”

The Mayor says he wants the railroad to "tighten up protocol."
