Casselton, ND (WDAY TV) - While clean up in Casselton is right on track, city officials say it will take some time to add up the costs of the crash.

When it comes to, "how much the city of Casselton lost from the accident," and will have to pay to bring the town back to normal”, city leaders could not even begin to estimate.

They say businesses were shut down for at least a day, people out of their homes and in hotels or at Discovery- then add in cleanup costs, both on the railroad, and surrounding farmland.

But city leaders say pushing for reimbursement is only half the battle with BNSF moving forward.

Ed McConnell/Casselton Mayor: “We have a lot of work to do yet. Health department is out watching the cleanup and there's a lot of cleanup to do yet, and we still need some answers on how safe these things are coming through town. Maybe the railroad needs to tighten up their protocol a little bit.”

The mayor says he will be working closely with the governor and state law makers to get those answers.
