Fargo, ND (WDAY TV) - Just last month, a team from BNSF was in town and spoke with us about the chances of a crude oil train accident happening here.

Here's what they said...

Amy McBeth- Speaking for BNSF in November: “Any incident with hazardous materials is very, very rare. In fact, 99.99% of hazardous materials make it to their destination without any incident.”

They were here to train a group of Fargo firemen how to respond to much smaller scale hazardous material accidents.

But at the time, never imagined how the training could help on a larger level, just a month down the road.

The firemen who were on scene in Casselton stress the importance of being ready because any accident (large or small) can happen at any time.

So they work with BNSF regularly to prepare.

Steve Dirksen- Fargo Fire Chief: “An incident like this is the larger one that gets a lot of the attention. What that training dealt more with was leaking valves, and vents and different events that could happen with the railcars as they come through on a much smaller scale.”

They say if something like this happened in Fargo, rescue would be top priority.
