Casselton, ND (WDAY TV) - The federal fact-finding mission is on in Casselton as the National Transportation Safety Board touched down Tuesday morning.
Richard Sumwalt- NTSB Board Member: “We are here to begin the investigation of the derailment and subsequent collision of two BNSF freight trains which led to an ensuing explosion and fire.”
Board members say they should be in town for about a week on scene to investigate after the fire stops burning.
They say although facts are limited right now, they know 20 cars derailed; 19 of them hauling crude oil.
Their job now is to figure out how it happened by looking at factors including track conditions, mechanics of the trains and signal systems.
Sumwalt: “Our purpose for being here is to find out what happened, why it happened, and then make recommendations to keep tragedies like this from happening again. That's why we're here.”
NTSB members say the full investigation of the derailment could take more than a year.
