Moorhead, MN (WDAY TV) - Speaking of liquor, it's an issue that comes up every year - Minnesota liquor stores opening on Sundays.

But now, Governor Mark Dayton says he'd sign a bill allowing it if it came to his desk.

Steven Hoffman at 99 Bottles in Moorhead says the store likely loses business they would otherwise get on Sundays.

It's just too easy to hop across the river.

Steven Hoffman/99 Bottles: "To stay competitive with a border city, with the number of liquor stores Fargo can have, that's something that would be great for us. We need that."

Governor Mark Dayton says he would sign a bill allowing liquor stores to open on Sundays, if lawmakers muster the votes to pass it.

But Representative Paul Marquart of Dilworth says he thinks that is unlikely.

Rep. Paul Marquart (D)/District 04B: "This is an issue that comes up every year."

Marquart voted no on the issue last session, where it was overwhelmingly defeated in the legislature.

He says most liquor store owners throughout Minnesota are against the idea.

Marquart: "They just don't see the need for it, they think it's just going to spread 6 days of sales over 7 days, and they think they're going to be at a big disadvantage with larger retailers because they don't think the business they may get in on that Sunday is going to cover the overhead."

He thinks Dayton's support could help, but probably won't change the tide.

Hoffman says he thinks it would be a positive thing.

Hoffman: "If it's there, it would be available for them, and I think our business would flourish with it."

Minnesota is one of twelve states that restrict liquor sales on Sundays.
