Fargo, ND (WDAY TV) - With one in four holiday travelers migrating via car, the health of your vehicle is pretty important.

The Frigid cold is keeping Fargo Tire Manager Mike Dow a busy man.

Mike Dow- Manager, Fargo Tire Services: "We started the day before Thanksgiving and we haven't had a break since."

And with 94.5 million Americans traveling this holiday season, the rush is on.

Dow: "Everybody is trying to hurry up and get everything done so they can get out of town."

If you are one of the roughly 90 percent of holiday travelers going by car, what is more important than the part of your car gripping the road?

Dow: "The big rush really put a damper on snow tire supplies."

If you didn't put a priority on winter tires, the next best thing is keeping your current tires healthy, which can be an issue when the temps drop.

Dow: "When it gets cold, the rubber in the tire contracts and, of course, the wheel will contract, too, because everything shrinks when it gets cold."

And that shrinking breaks the seals on your tire, allowing air to escape; so the best thing you can do to keep those treads gripping the road is make sure they are properly inflated; and when you see your tire is flat, get it fixed quickly.

Dow: "I tell ya what; don’t procrastinate.”

Dow: “There’s nothing worse than getting up in the morning when it’s 20 below zero and finding a flat tire."

Experts say for every 10 degree drop in temperature, your tires can lose 1 PSI of pressure.
