Fargo, ND (WDAY TV) - Teenagers are smoking more marijuana, but doing less binge drinking, according to a federal report released today.

23% of high school seniors surveyed had smoked marijuana in the past month, and 6.5% said they use the drug daily.

That's up from 6% a decade ago.

School resource deputy Katie Violet says she is not surprised, and expects that trend could be true locally.

Katie Violet/School Resource Deputy: "I've had students as young as 4th and 5th grade raise their hand and say, 'officer Katie, my parents said that marijuana is not a drug, it's just illegal.' And I've also had students say, 'my parents have told me that marijuana is actually more natural than tobacco smoke.'"

Alcohol use among teens continued a steady decline, at 13.7%, the percentage of sophomores who said they had recently drank five or more drinks dropped nearly two percent in just one year.
