Challenging road conditions in Fargo - Moorhead even with warm weather

Fargo, ND (WDAY TV) - Don't let this sun fool you.

The roads are tough and our first weeks in December have proven that.

Well, it's only December and so far these roads have already been slick and slushy.

But experts say that today, of all days, the sunny ones, they can be the most dangerous.

If anyone knows the road best,

"millions, millions."

it's this trucker.

Mike Bloemke/Truck Driver: "I've been on roads; I probably shouldn't have been on."

Mike Bloemke's been up and down these highways for over twenty years.

Hauling some of the heaviest loads, in some of the nastiest conditions.

Bloemke: "Icy, just terrible conditions."

Of course winter roads stink.

But we asked, what are some of the worst conditions to travel through.

His answer?

Bloemke: "If you can't see nothing, you can't drive."

A white out.

And our meteorologists agree.

But in all reality any bad weather makes for bad driving.

Even sunny ones like this.

Nathan Gannon/Clay County Highway Department: "Warmer days in the thirties, but the wind is blowing."

Because despite the warmth, that sun will disappear, and ice will creep in.

Gannon: "So a lot of the areas around bridges and especially when you're coming out of areas that are protected and into areas that are more open"

No matter the weather.

Sunny or snow.

Bloemke: "You've got to slow down."

Winter traveling is tough.

Bloemke: "If you're going to drive truck you're going to deal with it."

The Clay County Highway Department tells us the best thing to do is park it, if you can.
