Grand Forks, ND (WDAY TV) - This weekend, many ice fishers escaped the cold weather and headed indoors to the Ice Fishing Classic at Cabelas in East Grand Forks.
From new equipment demonstrations to displays of the latest technology. This year's Ice Fishing Classic shows just how far this family past time has come.
Bryne Sathre/Cabela's Ice Fishing Classic: “I've been involved in the ice fishing industry for over 30 years and it's really cool to see everything expanding.”
Sarah Prout/Marketing Manager at Cabela's:“It's changed from a heritage tradition for families to go out on the ice and fish to a competition. It's really become a very cultured sport.”
From Lake of the Woods, which saw fishers spend nearly 2 million hours on the ice last year, to Devils Lake, which attracts over four thousand anglers for its winter fishing tournament. Ice fishing is having an impact on the region.
Prout: “It's definitely evolved. I think the interest level and economic impact level of ice fishing is growing.”
Sathre: “It's a 12 month experience now and we're constantly working.”
Over the years ice fishing has seen great technological improvement, growing as a sport and industry.
Sathre: “You can now go out, drill a hole, look down through the ice and see everything. Without even having to worry about marking up with that tree or that building”
A sport and business that is expanding but still staying true to its roots. The simple things that first brought people onto the ice.
Prout: “The biggest reward is the smile on peoples face. Because a lot of people who go out with us guides they're people who never fished before and it’s a neat experience. Especially if they have kids. That is such a cool experience to watch that kid pull their first fish though the ice.”
