Fargo, ND (WDAY TV) - When news broke that Craig Bohl was leaving for Wyoming, Bison fans and local media started guessing who would be the next head coach, no one's name came up more than defensive coordinator Chris Klieman and today, a week later, Klieman was named the 30th head coach in NDSU football history.
With new NDSU head coach Chris Klieman, when did this start to sink in that this responsibility I wanted to take on?
Chris Klieman/New NDSU Head Coach: “later in the week, mind was so focused to get a great game plan for Coastal Carolina, was interested but not later in the week, dream of mine to be a head football coach and what better place than NDSU.”
Couple players told me you had a chance to go to Wyoming but you chose to stay how big was that had future opportunity at FBS job but wanted to be a head coach?
Klieman: “You hit it, to be a head coach, I'm 47 years old, head jobs are hard to get and hard to come by opportunity presented itself, best thing for me and my family and that's the key this was best fit for my family, love this place love these kids shown more yesterday love the coaches love the players and I need to go for this job, need to make sure Gene knows I want to be the head coach here this is special place”
How much did continuity with current team helped to get this job and helped ease their concerns for taking over in 2014?
Klieman: “I hope it did, ease their mind, traditions they know Bison culture will not change and I think that was important, important to let Gene know that, we're not going to a 3-3 defense and going 5 wide and chuck it all over the place that's not Bison football.”
I always hear you want to be the guy that replaces the guy that replaces the legend but you're stepping in replacing a legend at NDSU, how do you feel about that?
Klieman: “No question it's going to be difficult, not going to be Craig Bohl, guess it's the defensive guy in me, like the challenge, think the kids will be excited about but there's no doubt I've got big shoes to fill, all of us are going to buy into and make sure we're ready for the challenge in 2014.”
