Wahpeton, ND (WDAY TV) - As our area temperatures plummet to subzero levels, most of us are finding ourselves paying much more for heating bills.

For low income families, those high payments may be problematic.

In Richland County, hundreds of families have already signed up for help through the state-wide Low Income Home Emergency Assistance Program.

It runs from October through May, and provides anywhere from 5-95% assistance for eligible households.

Right now, the program is already serving 350 families this year.

Kristi Green/Rich. Co. Social Services Eligibility Worker: “Good old North Dakota. It's October, and then it's the holiday season, and then it's our cold weather. Everything comes all at once and that's when your bills start increasing.”

The program usually provides help for about 500 families each year in Richland County.
