Fargo, ND (WDAY TV) - Back here in Fargo, the news has hit pretty hard, and as you'll see and hear from this report from Dom Izzo, emotions are running high for NDSU athletic director Gene Taylor.
Gene Taylor/NDSU Athletic Director: “I’m not upset he's a friend guy you get to know, knew the day was coming knew Craig Bohl was going to have opportunities whether it was Wyoming or whoever, hate to see a guy you've built a great program hate to see it change but you know it will someday.”
That day is today as the shock was still visible on the players faces who were assembled this morning to the Fargodome for a team meeting where the captains and Taylor decided to have Bohl remain the coach for the duration of the playoff run.
Taylor: “Hats off to this football team it's a difficult time to lose your head coach conversation we had this morning proud of how they're handling this they know they have one thing in mind this disruption is not easy and with the senior leadership and the captains, think they'll be just fine”
As for the focus shifts from Bohl leaving the program Taylor says he's been preparing for this day for a while knowing schools like Wyoming would target the Bison head coach,
Taylor: “When I saw that Wyoming was open knew they'd come after Craig saw salary structure, knew this would be a tough one to overcome.”
The biggest question going forward is who replaces Bohl? Several websites are reporting that Brent Vigen, Chris Klieman and three other assistants will join Bohl in Laramie, but Taylor says he will give the current staff a close look.
Taylor: “Be foolish to overlook some of the staff on this football coaching staff, strong look at the coaches on this staff as we possibly nationally, we have recruits we committed to and we want to make sure they know who they're playing for and that next coach want to make sure build a staff as quickly as they can.”
Bison players did not comment today, later in sports, hear why Craig Bohl is being allowed to coach the team thru its playoff run.
