PARK RIVER, N.D. (AP) — A northeastern North Dakota woman is fighting a city law that would force her to lose her chickens.
Park River has a decades-old ordinance that prohibits the raising of livestock, including chickens, within the city limits. The law includes penalties of up to $500 and 30 days in jail.
Teresa Gire tells the Grand Forks Herald she doesn't know of anyone who has complained about her four 3-year-old chickens she keeps in an enclosed backyard coop. She says they're her pets and her grandchildren's pets.
Gire is researching livestock laws around the state to support her cause. She says Grand Forks and Fargo allow chickens to be raised within city limits, as well as other cities.
The Park River city council voted last month to uphold the ordinance.
