Fargo, ND (WDAY TV) - Sugar beet farmers at American Crystal Sugar's 40th annual joint meeting learn this year's low crop results could get even worse.

Eight Hundred American Crystal Shareholders came together with the Red River Valley Sugar beet Growers Association, to mark the 40th year of the cooperative.

But for some the meeting was not about celebrating.

Because of dropping sugar prices and lower crop sugar content, farmer’s returns dramatically decreased this year.

Falling to just $38 per ton, compared to more than $68 the year before.

Mark Yutrzenka/Sugar Beet Farmer: “It's dropped down significantly, and we're going to have to change our thoughts and our practices a little bit to try to cut costs to hold our income if we can.”

Farmers say at the meeting they were told prices could drop even lower.
