Fargo, ND (WDAY TV) - We are in for a 20 degree downward spiral in the next 24 hours and with the frigid temperatures comes big risks.
How long does it take before your uncovered skin runs the risk of feeling the bitter pain of frostbite?
Fischer: "Depends on the temperature but maybe half an hour?"
Cameron Critt/Shoveling Snow: "at least a half an hour"
Anas - "probably 20 minutes....I don't know what is the answer?
With the winds and temps we will see in the next few days, these guesses are right on.
Temps are expected to bottom out in the -5 to -10 range, with winds at 15-20 mph, but if it’s cold enough, wet enough and the wind is strong enough. Exposing my skin like this can cause permanent damage in as little as 30 seconds.
And the key to preventing this scenario is eliminating bare skin exposure.
Bundle up with multiple loose layers, make sure to wear a hat because 40 percent of body temperature can be lost from your head, and cover your mouth to protect your lungs from inhaling that cold air.
Anas - "and keep your coat zipped up."
