Detroit Lakes, MN (WDAY TV) - A weekend accident on thin ice has Becker County law enforcement on high alert.

The Sheriff's office says it's still too early in most of lakes country for walking, let alone driving on the ice.

That's how a rural Detroit Lakes man lost his dog, after his pickup truck broke through.

The Sheriff's office wants to send a warning, that ice should be at least four inches thick for walking that jumps to twelve to fifteen inches thick if you plan to drive a large vehicle.

Adam Douglas/Becker County Sheriff: “It's definitely early and you know, ice is different. One spot can be ten inches, and a few feet from that, it can be a lot less.”

The man, 49-year-old Stephen Sperl, did escape, and the sheriff's office says don't be fooled by snow covering the ice.
