Minneapolis, MN (WDAY TV) - Mahnomen football made its thirteenth appearance in the state title game today, more than any other school in Minnesota history.
It was also their third consecutive appearance.
The Indians tried to make it back to back championships as they faced Dawson-Boyd, the last team to beat them, 27 games ago, back in the 2011 title game.
Mahnomen looked motivated from the get go, Kody Lefebvre caps the Indians first drive with a TD run, 6-0.
They'd score on their 2nd possession to make it 12-0.
Third time they had the ball, Bob Bjorge, 36 yard touchdown run, 18-0 Mahnomen after a quarter.
They got tricky in the second quarter, the halfback pass Tommy Pavek to Lefebvre back to Pavek 44 yards, 25-7 Indians.
Later, Austin Reitan, who missed last year's title game with an ACL injury and worked so hard to return this year, finds the end zone from 40 yards out, 31-7 Mahnomen at halftime.
Make it back to back titles for the Mahnomen Indians and they do it in dominating and avenging fashion. 46-13 the final, capping a perfect 14-0 season.
Since leaving here two years ago after a loss to Dawson-Boyd in the championship game, Mahnomen has been virtually unstoppable rattling off 27 straight wins.
Today they avenged that loss to the Blackjacks and in the process broke the schools rushing and scoring record for a third straight year.
Tom Pavek, 179 Yds, 2 TD, Rec TD: “It's really fun, it's a fun offense to run and it keeps the game rolling. It's kind of what we wanted to get out to a quick start and run the ball down their throats.”
Austin Reitan/6 Rush, 79 Yds, TD: “Keep it simple, play boring football, that's what we do best and I think we did a good job of that today. It's nothing given to us, we earn every yard, we earn ever tackle and that's what we have maintained all year.”
Nathan Hanson/Mahnomen Sr. TE/DB: “It's perfect, senior year last game coming in against a team that we lost to two years ago, I played in that game and didn't want to lose you know the feeling you want to win.”
John Clark Jr./28-Game Winning Streak: “We changed some blocking schemes just a little bit based on the last time we played them expecting them to do and added a couple wrinkles and had a little fun with one play.”
Kody Lefebvre/10 Rush, 67 Yds, 2 TD, Pass TD: “This was the first time that we ran it ever, but we practice it almost every day but it felt pretty good.”
Clark Jr.: “It's funny the two sophomores, probably our two best play makers made a play and obviously a huge one.”
