Moorhead, MN (WDAY TV) - A mother is furious after she says her 16-year-old daughter was attacked in school and nothing has been done about it.
The victim's family says it's been nearly two weeks since the assault was reported and Monday night pleaded for action as they stood together and testified in front of the Moorhead School Board.
During public comment, the victim's mother was allowed three minutes to explain the situation.
In that time, you could tell she was angry, frustrated and disgusted with Moorhead Schools.
According to a close friend, the attack happened in the Moorhead High School theater where many other students watched as 16-year-old Emma Smith was thrown into a headlock and slammed to the floor.
Immediately, Emma filed a report with the school, but her mother wasn't aware of the attack until her daughter came home and told her.
In the mother's testimony, she claims her daughter was asked into the principal's office and asked to resolve the issue with her attacker, but she refused.
Natalie Smith Carlson- Victim’s Mother: "Then, the principal kept her in his office for 15 more minutes and talked about how she would be suspended if her attacker was because she had hit him when she was trying to get away. The principal again asked her to meet with the student who attacked her and she relented. She spent the meeting crying so hard she could not speak."
The assault was reported to police, but the family also says this isn't the first time the attacker has hurt someone at school.
The Moorhead School Board did not discuss the issue, but said they'd look into it.
