Fargo, ND (WDAY TV) - 'Tis the season to shop till you drop. Black Friday is almost here; and this year, stores are taking a new approach.

It's the day of the year that bargain shoppers prepare for Black Friday.

With an estimated $11.2 billion spent in stores on that one day last year, and an expected 97 million shoppers door-busting this year, the retail industry relies heavily on the income.

But is Black Friday becoming Black Thursday? Many retail outlets like Macy's are opening up their store-fronts for the first time on Thanksgiving… But is that the only time to get those great holiday shopping deals?

And who will show up? Many prospective shoppers seem turned off by the idea.

Nate Gilbraith- MSUM Student: "I feel bad for the employees that have to work that Thanksgiving. They can't enjoy it with their families."

Ashley Gaughan- MSUM Student: "I think that it wouldn't bother me if stores were closed. It’s kind of a day dedicated to family, so it'd be nice for those employees to have time with their families, too.”

Ben Jyring- MSUM Student: "I like the idea of families staying together for Thanksgiving and stores offering their employees that opportunity, as well."

Gilbraith: "If I did do any shopping, I would probably just do it online so I can avoid the crowds, and I mean you can get plenty of good deals that way. Usually have free shipping, so it's a pretty good deal."

And consumers cashed in on those deals in a big way last year.

26.5 million items were ordered through amazon.com on Cyber Monday alone. That’s 306 items per second. Expect their best prices again on December 2nd.

If you don't want to fight through the crowds or wait till Monday, online deals can be found right now. Amazon, Target, Wal-Mart and others have already started Black Friday week.

So exactly what is the best day for the best deals?

Well, it depends on what you are shopping for.

Thursday's deals are mostly the same as Friday's, so it's a matter of inventory and willingness to venture outside.

If you are shopping by genre and not a specific item, you might be better off seeing what's online on Monday.

West Acres mall doors will open at 8 p.m. Thanksgiving day.
