Badger, MN (WADY TV) - One soon-to-be famous Thanksgiving Day figure is already well on the road.

We're talking about the lucky turkey from Badger, Minnesota.

Like two kids, excitedly waiting for their first family road trip. The presidential turkey and his alternate, anxiously paced back and forth while their caregivers packed the van that will serve as the birds new home on their journey to Washington, D.C.

Peter Gruhl/Presidential Turkey Driver:” I guess it's sort of the turkey's pen on wheels. Trying to make the conditions and environment similar to what they've been raised in.”

Allowing the turkey's to be comfortable on their drive.

Damian Moore/Caretaker of Presidential Turkey: “well they walk around, they strut, they eat, they sleep.”

Driving the birds across the country is a man who has experience driving the presidential turkey to the white house.

Gruhl: “I've done this three times before. Each time for independent growers.”

The drive to D.C. is about 1,500 miles, a journey that like any other road trip, is filled with plenty of breaks.

Gruhl: “Every three to four hours have to stop and let the birds have feed and water. You learn that when they get up they want feed or water.”

Traveling to the capital, bringing attention to rural Minnesota.

Gruhl: “It's an honor for the whole town. The community, small town Badger, Minnesota.”
