Fargo, ND (WDAY TV) - For the first time, Sanford Health in Fargo is requiring all employees to get a flu shot.
They say it's in the interest of patient safety and to curb the spread of flu.
Healthcare providers commonly carry and spread the flu virus.
All staff must be vaccinated by February.
James Volk/Sanford Chief Medical Officer: "The most effective way of decreasing the spread of flu is really to vaccinate healthcare workers. In nursing homes, for example, actually vaccinating the people that work in nursing homes is a more effective way of reducing the spread than vaccinating the residents of the nursing homes."
There are exceptions for medical or religious reasons, and Sanford will work on a case-by-case basis with employees who refuse the vaccine.
