JAMESTOWN, N.D. (AP) — A former Mandan man accused of attacking a state prison guard in Jamestown has been sentenced to serve an additional eight years in prison.

The Jamestown Sun reports that 41-year-old Shawn Ostafin pleaded guilty this week to felony aggravated assault in the late September attack on James River Correctional Center guard Jeremiah MacDonald. MacDonald spent a day in the hospital.

Ostafin has since been transferred to the State Penitentiary in Bismarck. He was to be eligible for release in April 2020 on a terrorizing conviction but now will not be eligible until 2028.

Ostafin has a violent criminal history and was sentenced as a habitual offender, allowing for a longer term. He served a lengthy sentence for the 1990 murders of his father and stepfather.
