Fargo, ND (WDAY TV) - It was tough sledding for the South volleyball program the past two years, with back to back 7 win seasons and failing to even qualify for the East Region tournament.

But the Bruins are now back. Under first year head coach Andrea Hummel, and with just 3 seniors on the team, South qualified for state this weekend for the first time since 2010.

Andrea Hummel/1st year South Head coach: “there was a large amount of improvement that had to occur for us to be one of the top teams in the East. They really stepped it up all summer long and throughout the season and put in the time and the effort.”

Madison McConn/South Sr. Middle Hitter: “Everybody just has so much willpower. From starting at the bottom of the EDC last year, we just wanted it that much more. We've been putting in the work and we're really excited. That's our big key this year.”

South plays St.Mary's Thursday.
