Fargo, ND (WDAY TV) - Ugly Christmas Sweaters: They have long been the gift everyone loves to hate.

But in the past few years they've become a cultural phenomenon.

Today, the Red River Valley Fairgrounds even hosted an Ugly Sweater Run.

Knit appliques, jingle bells, even ornaments.

These over-the-top Christmas Sweaters aren't your typical 5K attire, but runners got into the holiday spirit as the Ugly Sweater Run stopped by West Fargo.

Drew Boraas/Fargo Resident: “We love ugly sweater parties, so we thought why not an ugly sweater run?”

Jennifer Olson/Warren, ND: "I love to run and I have questionable fashion sense anyway so I guess it's a chance to show it off!"

More than a thousand people showed up in their Christmas worst.

Mozelle Brunelle/Grand Forks Resident: "This is from my aunt. It smells like mothballs."

Shane Ringdahl/Fargo Resident: "I got this from a friend who got it as a white elephant gift."

But for those without friends or family to borrow from - there's always the local thrift shop.

Here at Savers they get so many people coming in looking for ugly holiday sweaters that they've created a section of their store just for that, making it easy to find the most hideous thing on the rack.

In fact, they say besides Halloween costumes, these are their biggest sellers.

Kristi Ricker/Retail Sales Manager: "Over the last few years it's become a cultural phenomenon. Everyone has parties and stuff."

Whether wearing it for a party or a nice run on a fall day, the Ugly Sweater has a way of bringing people together.

"It's just a good way to have fun, puts everybody on the same page."

The Ugly Sweater Run also collected donations for Toys for Tots.
