Abercrombie, ND (WDAY TV) - "It was a big, big fire."
"Amid the charred remains and mangled tin - flashbacks, this isn't the first time many of these firefighters have been called to this location."
It's the second time in 21 years.
"When the elevator burned back in the '90s it was the first fire I had been on."
Kevin Bernier/Abercrombie Fire Department: "Was my first fire as chief at Abercrombie fire department."
Wes Heyen/Abercrombie Fire: "Scene the smoke rising from here I have to say it was a pretty traumatic fire when you see 150 foot tall wood crib elevator burning in your town it's a major, major thing."
At the time Aber Elevator was managed by Wes and Shirley Berg.
While Shirley didn't want to comment on camera, she was kind enough to share these photos.
Tim Nicklay/Northland Truss Systems, Inc.: "Airplanes in dropping water on the first one. It was pretty big and scary."
Tim Nicklay works next door to the old elevator at Northland Truss Systems and says he has seen it all.
In fact, he helped stop this morning's fire.
Nicklay: "I came back out and there were flames coming through the garage door so I called 911"
Fire crews say the wind was from the right direction - thankfully ashes weren't blowing Truss Systems.
Heyen: "They employ dozens of people, major employer here in the city so we want to keep the going."
It's unknown if the current owner will rebuild, our calls were not returned.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
