Wahpeton, ND (WDAY TV) – They were under the radar all season long, just going about their business, knocking off teams week after week, without much fanfare.

And here the Wahpeton Huskies sit, back in the Dakota Bowl for the first time since 1998 and will take on a very solid defensive St. Mary's squad.

The Huskies have lost just once this season and proved themselves to the entire state by going on the road last week and beating number one Minot Ryan.

Hunter McCall/Wahpeton Sr. Center: “Our ultimate goal coming into the season wasn't to get to the state championship; it was to win the state championship. That's what we're looking forward to and we want to win this game really bad.”

Brian Dokken/4th Year Wahpeton Head Coach: “At the beginning of the year, we knew we had something really special going. How far we were going to get? We didn't quite know. We just knew that we had to work hard every single week to get better every week. And we did it. We're in a spot right now where we have a right to play for a state championship. These kids have deserved this opportunity and hopefully we can put on a show on Friday.”

Here's a neat Nerd Stat about this Friday's game, the last time Wahpeton won a state championship in 1971, they beat St. Mary's to win it the team they play on Sunday, the game is at 3, part of our quadruple-header.
