SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (AP) — A South Dakotan who has given millions toward health care needed to tap into it when he woke up recently and couldn't walk or breathe.

Sioux Falls philanthropist T. Denny Sanford says he survived a near-fatal blockage of the lungs as he prepared to go pheasant hunting last month.

He told the Argus Leader he "was within minutes or hours of death."

Sanford was staying with friends at a hunting lodge near Gregory when he got up and knew something was wrong.

A Sanford Health plane flew him to Sioux Falls for treatment and he says he has recovered well.

Sanford has donated an estimated $700 million to the health system.
