Minneapolis, MN (WDAY TV) - Joe Mauer's numbers already put him as one of the best catchers in baseball history, and because of his position and those numbers, he was handsomely rewarded with a $23 million-a-year contract, but he won't be playing catcher anymore.

Monday, Mauer and the Twins announced that he will move to first base full-time next season.

Mauer missed the final 30 games of this past season with a concussion after taking a foul tip off the mask.

Mauer had resisted making a move in the past, but after lingering injury concerns, he's on board with the change.

Joe Mauer- Baseball Player: “My family; I'm going to be a father and husband heck of a lot longer than a baseball player. Even if I didn't have my family, it would still be the decision I'd make just easier to make knowing that I have them to worry about.”

Mauer said he is symptom free off the concussion; he has played 56 career games at first base.
