Avoiding scams regarding Typhoon Haiyan relief

Fargo, ND (WDAY TV) - The death and destruction left in the wake of Typhoon Haiyan have many people here wondering how they can help.

American Red Cross Employees say before you donate, do your homework; because scammers often take advantage during times of devastation.

The best thing to do is find a charity that has a track record of dealing with disaster.

When you decide on one, make sure to designate which disaster you want your money to go to; that way you make sure you donate to Typhoon Haiyan.

The American Red Cross is there helping and has a direct donation link on its website.

Brian Shawn- American Red Cross: "So people are calling you. That's kind of a red flag to say, ‘you know what, we don't want to donate to you because we're not going to give you our credit card information over the phone.’”

In addition to not donating over the phone, never send cash.
