FARGO, ND (WDAY TV) - We've seen her grow up before our eyes from high school standout to an-all conference college player to now high school coach. Tonight on Beyond the Game how Jennifer Lopez has made the switch with help from her family.
Ever seen I was little having my mom as a coach inspired me to coach and be a teacher at some point I wanted to coach high school and this just seemed like the best fit.
The best fit for Lopez is the bench at Oak Grove. The former standout for DGF and NDSU is in her first year as coach just two years removed from her final game on the court.
Jennifer Lopez/Oak Grove Head Coach: “Being able to share that experience with them, and how I was able to be successful and try to share that success is one way to play at that next level.”
Hannah Kelley/Oak Grove Sr. Middle Hitter: “If we're doing something wrong she knows how to correct us, she can show us how to do it, she plays against us and if you play against her, you're not going to play against anyone better than that.”
It's a family reunion for each game for Lopez, because her entire family is in the stands, mom Jean who coached at DGF for 20 plus years and sister Kelly, who like Jennifer was a standout at DGF and with the Bison.
Kelly Lopez/Former D-G-F/NDSU Volleyball Standout: “My first thought was "oh boy" kind of know what mom went thru, it's a lot to handle is she ready for it.”
Jean Lopez/Former D-G-F Head Coach: “I think it came naturally to her from the wanting to be a teacher and wanting to help and correcting all the time.”
Jennifer: “My mom's done this for so many years why not partake into that knowledge that she shown onto us, my sister sees the X's and O's, very helpful, it's a little family discussion we have going sometimes.”
Kelly: “She's very much like my mom, she's very calm, she can process problems, knows how to teach and can handle different kids of people those will be her biggest attributes.”
Jennifer: “I miss playing, but I know my time has past, it's time for me to help that next group.”
Lopez has helped Oak Grove out in a big way this season, the Grovers are the third seed for next week's region tournament.
