Fargo, ND (WDAY TV) - Three adults at the center of a drug bust near a Fargo Elementary school are behind bars tonight and three children are now victims.

The raid took place at 9 o'clock this morning on 18th Street South, less than 500 feet from Jefferson Elementary School.

Three adults, Tawni Johnson, Brady Swanson and Brandon Wahl, have been arrested for possession of meth, pills and marijuana, intent to distribute and child endangerment as 3 children under the age of 7 were found to be living in the apartment.

Police say drugs were within arm's reach of the children.

At least two of the children are in the custody of Child Protective Services tonight.

Evidence of children is not hard to find in this neighborhood.

In fact, there's a school zone sign just outside of the apartment and side walk chalk lines the walkway to the apartment.

Lieutenant Joel Vettel tells me that 11 grams of meth were discovered in the home, next to children's clothes and a bag of Halloween candy in the apartment.

Additionally, hydrocodone pills were within arm's reach of a sleeping infant inside the apartment.

I spoke with a man who has lived in the apartment building in the past.

He tells me that it's not all that unusual for police to be in the area and that drug use and distribution here is just a fact of life.

Nus Bachtijar/Neighborhood Resident: “Low income families live around this neighborhood, they try to make money and, you know. There's always going to be drugs if there's poverty, in my opinion.”

Police say at no time did they consider the situation to be violent, so they opted to not lock Jefferson Elementary down.
