Fargo, ND (WDAY TV) - Funerals and memorial services are usually set aside for remembering a person who has passed away.
But there is a new social media trend, where people attending funerals are instead taking the opportunity to snap off self-portraits.
In case you're unfamiliar with what a "selfie" is, here's a quick tutorial: it's when you take a picture of yourself using a cell phone. And then post it to social media. Typically the background is irrelevant. But a new trend is making it a premise.
The main site used for the trend is Tumblr. The page is called "Selfies at Funerals".
The posts come from young adults or teenagers at funerals. Some posts are made in memoriam... others just appear to be vanity shots.
For instance: One girl wrote that she really liked how her hair looked, but hated why she was dressed up.
Response nationwide and right here at home has been critical.
Josh Jacobs/Works in Technology Industry: "It's...It's inappropriate"
Josh Jacobs works locally in IT and says social media seems to have one aim.
Jacobs: "They all want their 15 minutes."
Some national experts suggest it's likely the product of young adults being inexperienced when it comes to handling death.
Philip Larson/ MSUM Non-Traditional Freshman: "It's just the way the world works."
Philip Larson is a non-traditional freshman at MSUM.
He says his college experience has offered him a fresh perspective on the role social media plays for young adults.
"They tend to use social media to express themselves a lot more than I would have thought."
But fellow MSUM freshman Erin Mesker says social media's prominence is no excuse,
Erin Mesker/MSUM Freshman: "I don't, I don't even know why they have their phones with them."
for what she sees as blatant disrespect.
In addition to a page on Tumblr, there is also now an entire website devoted to the trend.
