Pelican Rapids, MN (WDAY TV) - Viking Elementary in Pelican Rapids had a high-profile visitor Friday.

Minnesota Commissioner of Education, Brenda Cassellius, visited the school, one of ten in the state that earned early removal from the "focus school" list.

The school had low test scores in 2011.

Schools are expected to stay on the list for three years, but Viking was removed early after making huge progress.

Brenda Cassellius/Minnesota Education Commissioner: "I'm going around to all of the schools in the state looking at how they're making improvements and this is a school that's improving, got off "the list" so to speak so I'm anxious to talk to teachers and find out about the great work that they're doing here."

Cassellius says there are still improvements that can be made.
