Fargo, ND (WDAY TV) - North Dakota Senator Heidi Heitkamp today introduced her first bill to the U.S. Senate since taking office in January.

The bipartisan legislation would create a commission to study issues facing Native Americans on reservations nationwide.

It would look at issues such as poverty, unemployment, child abuse, domestic violence and drug abuse.

Heitkamp says problems she saw on reservations when she first became attorney general in 1993 are even worse today.

Heidi Heitkamp (D) North Dakota: “We have got to get our hands on this and better understand the dynamics. We've got to begin to solve the problem.”

Heitkamp says the cost of the commission study will be about 2 million dollars.
