Moorhead, MN (WDAY TV) - Some MSUM faculty may be retiring sooner than they expected.
MSUM has sent eligible faculty early retirement options as a means to avoid layoffs.
Contacted faculty have until November 8th to respond.
It’s part of an ongoing effort to battle budget deficits after enrollment at MSUM dropped 11.6% since 2010.
David Wahlberg/MSUM Communications & Marketing: "When you look at the total budget for a university, and were pretty typical, 77% of budget is salaries, 67% of that is faculty salaries so when you’re looking for pools of money where you can make meaningful reductions, you have to include the faculty line."
Out of the approximately 100 faculty members contacted, MSUM is hoping 35 to 40 accept the offer.
