FARGO – A family in south Fargo woke to the smell of smoke this morning as a fire blazed on the third floor of their century-old home.

Don and Mary Kinzler, along with two of their children and a pet rabbit, fled the house in the 1400 block of 42nd Avenue South at about 5 a.m. Mary Kinzler said she was awakened by the smell of smoke and when family members searched for its source they discovered smoke coming from the third floor, an area they mostly use for storage.

Don Kinzler, The Forum’s weekly gardening columnist, and his family moved the Victorian house from Fergus Falls to a large plot near Rose Creek in 1992.

Don Kinzler said the house was built in 1895.

The fire caused moderate damage to the third floor attic area and light damage to the remainder of the house, according to the Fargo Fire Department, which said the cause of the fire had not been determined.
