Fargo, ND (WDAY TV) - An Ellendale man who has donated more than 40 gallons of blood received the AARP's highest honor.

Jim Billey accepted the Andrus Award for Community Service at a volunteer recognition banquet tonight.

In addition to being a frequent donor, Billey has driven more than 100,000 miles as a volunteer driver for United Blood Service, and was instrumental in turning the local hospital into an assisted living complex after it closed.

Jim Billey: "Volunteering involves passion for the project or cause and then finding the time to volunteer.”

The Andrus Award is given to one North Dakotan each year.
