Sports - they're known as family outings and it's typical to pay at a high school event,
But now 7th 8th and 9th grade games are coming with a price tag.

Bill Schwandt/Parent: "It doesn't sound like a lot but they pay a lot to have their kids in sports."
Ken Griffis/Parent: "I wouldn't want to pay but I see why they want you to pay and help out with costs and stuff like that."
Whether it's a hot dog or a cup of cocoa for the entire family it adds up, and now families have to pay at the gate.
Cheryl Schwandt/Parent: "I have 6 kids. This is youngest one that plays and they keep you pay you pay and you pay as a parent."
But across the border - Valley City Officials say prices are on the rise, from transportation to equipment.
Yet some parents have mixed emotions.
Bill Schwandt: "No, I never thought we would have been paying for that but I can understand with the budget pressures they have they want everyone to pay their fair share."
Cheryl Schwandt: "It's middle school. The grandparents should be able to attend without it cost as well. Do you want just the parents at the games or do you want spectators at the games."
Valley City will begin charging for winter sporting events at the middle school - and the trend is expected to continue to every sport.
