Moorhead, MN (WDAY TV) - After standing tall along the banks of the Red River for more than 100 years - the old Moorhead Power Plant is set to be torn down.
This afternoon the Public Services Commission awarded a bid of $1,000,000.
$80,000 to Landwehr Construction of St. Cloud.
The structure - originally built in 1895 - hasn't been fully operational for 20 years.
The decision to destroy the structure was made after a 2012 report found 20 percent of the building was slumping into the river.
Site demolition and abatement will include getting rid of asbestos and old mercury.
Travis Schmidt – Moorhead Public Services: “The contractor will actually be salvaging items and material out of the demo process as helps to reduce the costs of demoing the entire structure.”
The City Council will also have to approve the contractor and bid - at next week’s meeting.
Schmidt says the project is set to begin in November and wrap up in May or June.
