Fargo, ND (WDAY TV) - And although we know when and where the race kicks off, one big intangible on runners' minds is, of course, the weather.
I would think the threat of cold and snow would be enough to inspire most people to embrace the indoors.
But some athletes' workouts are just too fierce to be contained by walls.
The big question this time of year for athletes as the leaves start to fall: how do you protect yourself against the biting cold?
Maddie McClellan/Beyond Running Store Sales Manager: "People think you have to be crazy to run outside when it's this cold out. But, if you get the right gear and you have people to run with and stay
motivated, more power to you."
Maddie McClellan runs competitively and sells threads to the fearless at Beyond Running.
McClellan: "Having something to give you wind protection is going to help you a ton."
Two other words to commit to heart: base layers.
McClellan: "So, like this would be a good base layer. You know, it's really thin, it's not a super thick one, it's something that's just going to do the job of wicking that sweat away from you."
On top of the thin base and wind layer, you might also consider gloves and ear or head protection.
And if you're worried about slipping-- invest in ice grips for your shoes.
But almost as important as the gear is not over doing it.
McClellan: “Normally, just walking around, you'd wear a thick jacket or whatever. You have to think about, 'Ok, I'm doing a lot more than just walking to my car."
Adam Holscher has logged a few marathons in his Long Johns.
And says there's a good rule of thumb to remember when it comes to dressing the part.
Adam Holscher/All-season runner: "You want to dress like its 20 degrees warmer out."
A full winterized outfit, if you're buying brand new will run you a couple hundred dollars but you know one great thing about winter is Christmas.
Add the gear to your wish lists, runners.
