Senator Heitkamp was the keynote speaker at Friday's North Dakota Head Start conference in Fargo.
Besides voicing her commitment to the program, Heitkamp also spoke about the recent shutdown in Washington.
Head Start programs in several states had to close during the shutdown, though they stayed open in North Dakota.
Sen. Heidi Heitkamp /Democrat North Dakota: "We've obviously bridged this impasse, we're now back open again, so money should be flowing to your programs, you should be at least made whole. You're still sequestered and I know that's tough based on the numbers. But at least we are paying our bills again."
More than 100 head start slots have been eliminated in North Dakota due to sequestration.
