How To Be Prepared For A Tornado

A City of Grand Forks representative said a few items on a short list making being prepared very easy.

With flood season, harsh winters and now tornadoes, most of us in the region do pretty well at being prepared for just about anything.

On May 30th,the region got its first taste of tornado weather for this season and now might be a good time to stock up on what you might need to get through the storm because they are not like other disasters.

"You usually have time to plan. With a tornado, you may not have any time at all," said Kevin Dean, with Grand Forks Public Information.

You do not have to plan for the end of the end of the world, but pick up a few things to be prepared.

Dean said one of the most important things to have is a portable radio, because a power outage means no TV or computer.

Batteries are the next key item. Make sure they are fresh and you have an assortment.

Grab a flashlight, nothing fancy, but something that will keep you out of the dark. Dean points out, remember the little ones.

"If you have young children, grab a box of crackers or something that will keep them occupied," he said.

Beyond that, it is up to you. Personalize your tornado preparedness kit with a first aid kit, some water or anything you might want to have while you wait out the storm.
