Fargo, ND (WDAY TV) - After back-to-back slobber knocker Missouri Valley games, the question facing top-ranked NDSU this week, was the concern of a letdown against an always scrappy Missouri State squad on homecoming.
And just like they typically do, the Bears gave the Bison a very good game.
Big plays were the story of this one, midway through quarter one, Ryan Smith fields the punt on his own 15 up the left side gets a couple of great blocks and then shows his speed, 85 yards, the 3rd punt return for a touchdown of his career.
It was 10-6 Bison in the 2nd quarter, when Kierra Harris airs it out to Julian Burton, 65 yard score; Missouri State led 13-10.
The big plays continued.
Brock Jensen to Zach Vraa, 52 yards down to the 2 yard line; which set up a touchdown.
Bison back in front 17-13
Just before the half, Jensen to Vraa again both had "career" days.
Jensen 313 yards passing & Vraa 179 yards receiving.
NDSU up 24-13 at halftime.
But early in the 3rd Jensen's arm gets hit.
Caleb Schaffitzel picks the errant pass and scores and he returned one against Jensen last year too.
Missouri State still in the game, down 24-20.
Jensen then went back to his main man, Vraa, his second touchdown of the day.
It was eventually 41-20.
It finished up 41-26.
Bison roll up 450 total yards, including Jensen's first career 300 yard passing game.
They pull away for the 41-26 win.
NDSU rolls up 450 total yards, and as Dom Izzo explains a lot of that came from the right arm of number 16.
Brock Jensen has accomplished many things during in his time under center at NDSU, but today he had a career first, 300 passing yards in a game and in the process may have found a legitimate deep threat in Zach Vraa.
Brock Jensen - 20-28, 313 Yards, 3 Touchdowns, 1 Interception: He's a threat teams have to account for him downfield, and he's going to make plays he's got great body control be able to use his hands and make plays.”
Zach Vraa – 5 receptions, 179 Yards, 2 Toucdowns: “Every deep ball we get every time I get a chance to make a play at it, every time we connect it boosts my confidence and just getting those short passes is good but those deep passes are good for me and Brock.”
Craig Bohl- 4-2 Record Vs Missouri State: “Anytime we get in valley play, we need to find a way to win and coming in that with the style of offense they had they would gain some matchups.”
Christian Dudzik- Interception, Fumble Recovery: I think we can play better, the whole defense can feels that way, giving up too many big plays in the secondary, the secondary put in on us, we haven't been playing well, we have to be better.”
The news after the game not all rosy for NDSU, All-American corner Marcus Williams has a broken left hand but he said he should play next week against Southern Illinois as the Bison go for a 16th consecutive victory at Gate City Bank Field
